Air Liquide, a partner of the Hello Tomorrow Challenge 2016, supports start-ups that tackle air pollution

Air Liquide is a partner of the third edition of the Hello Tomorrow Challenge, a global competition for early-stage science start-ups. Following several months of competition, around forty start-ups in the Air Quality category were assessed by Air Liquide employees. 7 start-ups are selected for the final round of the challenge, which will take place in the CentQuatre premises, in Paris, on October 13-14.

  • AirVisual (China) develops an air quality forecasting technology for more than 8,000 cities worldwide.
  • DFD (France), a CEA (French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy Commission) spin-off, offers a safe and eco-friendly alternative for degreasing mechanical parts to traditional processes currently in application, thus avoiding VOCs emissions.
  • Citytree (Germany) offers urban landscapes able to measure outdoor air quality, and to purify it
  • TerraOak (Ghana) offers a cooking stove that enables to reduce indoor air pollutants and to convert heat energy into power.
  • Sensichips (Italy) develops innovative sensors to measure air pollution.
  • White Lab (UK) develops a technology to measure airborne allergens.
  • Arborea (UK) offers a technology to artificially reproduce photosynthesis and absorb CO2.

In the Air Quality category, the winning start-up will be selected by a jury made up of an Air Liquide representative, investors, and an entrepreneur. It will be awarded a €15,000 prize and will compete for the Final and try to win the Grand Prize, across all categories, and the €100,000 award associated.

The Hello Tomorrow challenge is open to young researchers and entrepreneur from around the world. It aims to promote projects that combine both science and technology, within 10 industrial categories: Aeronautics, Food & Agriculture, Beauty & Well-being, Data & A.I., Water & Waste, Energy, Air Quality, Industry 4.0, Healthcare, Transportation & Mobility. Air Liquide is the sponsor of the Air Quality category, which was created in 2016.

Launched in December 2014, the Hello Tomorrow challenge gathers almost 5,000 start-ups from 112 countries, relying on its ambassador network to promote the event at a local scale.

All along the competition, the Air Liquide teams were fully involved into the Hello Tomorrow challenge. Group employees assessed the 40 pre-selected start-ups based on criteria such as the technological innovation submitted, the potential of the target market, the societal impact and the team’s profile. Air Liquide’s participation to the Hello Tomorrow challenge is in line with the open innovation approach of the Group. With this challenge, Air Liquide can identify a number of disruptive technologies, as well as potential collaborations within the global innovation ecosystem.
